By 1966, an El Camino could be ordered with the same equipment as a Chevelle SS, although that package’s badging and blacked-out grille treatment were not available. As the Chevelle evolved, so did its more utilitarian counterpart, including under the hood. The second-generation El Camino had the styling and features of the Chevelle and exceeded the Ford Falcon-based Ranchero’s load capacity, a combination that lured more than one buyer away from the Ford camp. Introduced in 1959 as a pickup version of the full-size Brookwood station wagon in response to Ford’s Ranchero pickup, the Chevrolet El Camino was discontinued after the 1960 model until 1964, when it returned as a spinoff of the popular new Chevelle. Although relatively rare today, the El Camino was a popular vehicle with the muscle-car buyer seeking both power and utility. It makes for an awesome classic you need to get your hands on right now. This 1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS is possibly the only example in existence equipped with the rare L89 aluminum-head option. Plus, you have great all-around driving features like power steering, power brakes, front discs, and wide radial tires.Ĭomplete with owner's manual, this El Camino has a sophisticated look and a wicked power package. ![]() ![]() The TH400 three-speed automatic transmission is a stout unit built to handle big blocks, and this feeds a strong 12-bolt rear end. It's enhanced with a Holley four-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock aluminum intake, Mickey Thompson valve covers, and long tube headers that add even more power while feeding a rumbling dual exhaust. This is a year-correct 396 cubic-inch motor, but it also doesn't take much to see it has been given some nice investments. Under the hood is proper big block power. Your factory gauges are now accompanied by a Sunpro auxiliary readout trio and a large tach centrally mounted on the steering column. It's easy to get comfortable behind the wheel with a later model Chevy steering wheel mounted on a tilt column. Plus, you rarely find these El Caminos with features like power locks and power windows. There have been some nice investments in upgrades along the way, like an AM/FM digital tuner w/cassette and provisions for R134a air conditioning (it will need servicing). It feels great with the seat, carpeting, and headliner having that deep dark appearance. The black accents of the exterior get you ready for the all black interior. And all this darkness is also good with the rest of the muscle car element, like the dual power domes in the hood, large dual exhaust tips, and American Racing Wheels with wider rubber in the rear. There's also a hint of premium with the black vinyl roof and the aerodynamic bed cover. It starts on the Super Sport elements like the blackout grille, tailgate insert, and the full-length SS396 stripe that highlights the straightness of the sheet metal. In fact, you know this because there's a well-coordinated black that harmonizes nicely with the deep green. The green has the dark intimidation you want, without going fully black. So it's a terrific Chevy color when you want distinction, especially since this one has been given a respray later in life for a good gloss. The trim tag tells us it's the factory-correct color, and it was only available in 1969. And there's extra power under the hood with an enhanced big block.įathom Green is always desirable. There's extra comfort inside with pieces like the power windows and locks. There's extra distinction from a unique and shining paint. This 1969 Chevrolet El Camino has the right extras. 396CI V8, TH400 3SPD AUTO, PWR STEER/BRAKES, DRIVES WELL, GR8 COLOR COMBO, NICE!
